8 Sleeper Sofas You and Your Guests Are Sure to Love (2024)

Sleeper sofas are the ultimate functional piece of furniture, but finding the right one is tricky. You want one that’s comfortable enough to make guests want to stay another night (no metal springs here) and isn’t super large and clunky.

Whether you’re in a one-bedroom apartment and need to host guests overnight or you want to turn your at-home office into a hybrid bedroom, we’ve tested over 30 sofas in the last year-plus to find out what makes a sleeper sofa actually good.

Aside from a gorgeous exterior and plush cushions, mattress comfortability is major in finding the best sleeper sofa. And although it’s a couch, that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your sleep quality.

With comfort in mind, we've done all the hard work for you by sitting, lounging, and sleeping on the best sleeper sofas in our homes for up to a year. We hand-selected the best-selling sleeper sofas from the best places to buy couches and evaluated them based on comfort, how long they last, material quality, and value.

What We Like

  • Deep cozy seats

  • Gel foam mattress

  • Multi-seat or bench option

What We Don't Like

  • May be too soft for some

A sleeper version of one of West Elm’s popular couches, the Haven is cozy with deep seating, down alternative seat cushions, and a comfortable gel foam mattress that contours the body.

We love that this sleeper’s seat cushions have foam cores that are wrapped in a down alternative, because sitting on a sleeper sofa is not exactly the same as a non-sleeper.

"You are essentially sleeping on the sleeper mechanism which will provide a firmer sit or feel," says Danna Smith, manager designer at Pamela Hope Designs. "A softer spring down seat cushion is recommended where there are individual springs inside the cushion core and wrapped with a down-blend for comfort."

With a modern, sleek silhouette, you can choose between multi-seat (two cushions) or bench-style cushions (just one cushion) and a plethora of fabric and color options to best suit your home. With stain-resistant fabrics, we don’t see cleaning being a hassle, plus it’s great for households with kids or pets.

Along with its gorgeous appearance, it has a supportive solid pine wood frame and short removable legs if you like the platform bed look. Unlike many of the firm couches in our guide, this sleeper sofa is the perfect option for those looking for a cloud-like sofa with a plush mattress to match.

Sofa Dimensions: 78.5 x 40 x 31.5 inches | Mattress Size: Queen | Frame Material: Solid pine wood | Upholstery Material: 70-plus, including Chenille, Velvet, Linen, Twill, Canvas, Boucle

What We Like

  • Small space-friendly

  • Quick and easy to assemble

  • Tempur-response memory foam mattress

What We Don't Like

  • Couch cushions need to be broken in

The Joybird Briar Sleeper Sofa is the most comfortable mattress we’ve slept on, and its quality hasn’t declined or altered since we first started testing it over a year ago. And with its overall compact size, this multi-functional sofa is a great way to maximize and style a small apartment living room.

With a mid-century modern design, this sleeper sofa is constructed with a durable engineered wooden frame and kiln-dried solid wood spring rails. The sofa’s cushions aren’t the most plush and cloud-like, as we found it does require a bit of a breaking into period. But, the more we lounged on it, the more comfortable it became. So, if you’re someone who prefers firmer seating, this is an excellent option.

However, the mattress is the complete opposite. Joybird allows you to choose between standard foam or Tempur-response memory foam. The good news is that after testing this sofa bed for over a year and having numerous guests sleep on it, we still give this mattress a perfect comfort rating for comfortability. And pulling out the bed was quick and easy, only taking 30 seconds.

We also love the quality of the upholstery and its high-performance fabric. Even with accidental spills and dirty paws, there’s never been a stain in sight. And whether you’re not the best at following directions or you simply don’t want to lift a finger, you can add on white-glove delivery. We opted for white glove delivery during our test, and the couch was assembled in five minutes.

Sofa Dimensions: 79 x 36 x 35 inches | Mattress Size: Twin, Queen | Frame Material: Engineered wood | Upholstery Material: Polyester, velvet, chenille

What We Like

  • Plush and supportive cushions

  • Durable frame

  • Roomy storage chaise

What We Don’t Like

  • Mattress isn’t the most comfortable

  • Poor white glove delivery service

Known to be one of the best sectional sofas we tested, the West Elm Harmony Sleeper Sectional also makes an excellent everyday couch with plush yet supportive cushions and durable construction. This sleeper sofa has five throw pillows, large and small, and a storage chaise we found useful for housing our throw blankets and extra pillows.

We've tested this sleeper sofa for a year so far, and we continue to love its sturdiness and pull-out mechanism. The frame is extremely sturdy and glides in and out so gracefully you'd think it was a ballerina. Converting the sofa took all but a minute.

Unlike the cloud-like cushions, the mattress itself isn't the most comfortable, which is the one downside. We could feel the bars from the frame, but it's doable for a one or two-night's rest. This sectional is perfect for those who need a sleeper sofa for occasional overnight guests but are mainly looking for a high-quality, cozy sectional that fits their mid-century modern design style.

And if you’re looking for a stain-resistant sofa, this sleeper has a wide variety of performance fabrics and colors.

When it came to assembling, we opted for the white glove delivery service. However, our experience with the service could have been better, leaving us to finish the work and re-screw the sectional.

What We Like

What We Don't Like

  • Hard and unsupportive mattress

The Article Nordby is the perfect mix between a modern upholstered sofa and a daybed thanks to its extended upholstered seat or an attached ottoman.

This sofa bed is a durable, high-quality pick that's constructed to last for many years.

If you have an active household with kids, pets, or both, this couch's performance fabric can withstand any spill and makes picking up cat hair easy. With its tightly knitted material, your pet could scratch the couch, and you still wouldn't get any pilling.

We didn’t find this to be the most comforting sleeper sofa for a night’s rest, but the couch itself was firm yet comfortable, plump and supportive. If you’re someone who has aches and pains, however, this isn’t for you. Instead, we recommend investing in our most comfortable pick, the Joybird Briar Sleeper Sofa.

The couch comes fully assembled, so there's no need to worry about paying extra for a white glove delivery. The only setup required is screwing on the legs. We did have to watch a tutorial video to convert the sofa into a sleeper, but we felt like pros after our first try.

Sofa Dimensions: 35 x 87 x 33 | Mattress Size: Not listed | Frame Material: Steel | Upholstery Material: Polyester

What We Liked

  • Small silhouette

  • Cooling memory foam mattress

  • Removable slipcover

What We Didn’t Like

  • Thin rolled arm padding

  • Back cushions loses fluff after a while

Whether in a one-bedroom apartment or a studio, the Pottery Barn Cameron Roll Arm sleeper sofa lets you have a living room during the day and a bedroom at night.

This modern and compact sofa bed comes in a two or three-seater. It has polyester-wrapped cushions that are comfortable and supportive. Although cozy, after testing this couch for a year, the back cushions aren’t as fluffy and constantly need to be rotated and fluffed for a tidied-up look.

However, the five-inch memory foam mattress is still extremely comfortable from the time we first tested it, and it is supportive enough for a 300-pound person with back issues. And if you’re a hot sleeper, even better. One inch of the five includes a gel-infused topper that wicks away body heat.

Converting the couch to a sleeper took us nothing but three minutes. Once converted, you can still sit up and relax with the sofa’s double-locking headrest and fall-away crossbar. We also loved how well the material repelled to stains even with having a busy household. The slipcover is easy to wash, dries quickly and isn’t a hassle to put back on.

This small, space-friendly couch is a great investment for those who desire a firm yet comfortable sleeper sofa that's easy to clean and has an ultra-comfortable mattress. But if you want a quality sofa bed that's still compact in size and costs a few hundred dollars less, we recommend the Joybird Briar Sleeper Sofa.

Within six months of testing, we did notice the padding of Pottery Barn Cameron's rolled arms started to thin. This may be minor, but with its steep price tag, we expected better quality.

What We Like

  • Luxury modern design

  • Large silhouette

  • Included mattress topper for easy clean

What We Don't Like

  • Mattress sits on the ground

For those looking for something more luxurious, the Rove Concepts Milo Sleeper Sofa looks the part and is sturdily made with a kiln-dried wooden frame and solid stainless steel legs. Its low, platform-like profile may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's great for those wanting to achieve a sleek and modern style or make a smaller space appear larger.

The Milo sleeper is a bit wider than most sofas, so we highly suggest measuring your door frames. Moving a couch through a narrow door is never fun. In addition to its unique width, this isn't your traditional pull-out mattress-style sleeper. With a hidden zipper behind the cushions, you then unfold the bed with a simple tug on the pull tag handle, and you're met with a queen-sized mattress on the floor.

There aren't any legs to lift the mattress. However, it does come with a removable mesh cover that can easily be tossed in the wash for easy cleaning. You can then dress the bed with the best bed sheets and a comfy duvet.

Sofa dimensions: 88 x 40 x 25 inches | Mattress Size: 60 x 80 inches or 65 x 74 inches | Frame Material: Kiln-dried wood | Upholstery Material: Velvet, vegan suede, felt, linen, boucle, microfiber leather, plush weave

What We Like

  • Comfortable yet firm cushions

  • Soft memory foam mattress

  • Durable kid-friendly fabric

What We Don’t Like

  • Long delivery time

The best couches are ones the entire family can enjoy, including the tiny humans with sticky hands. The Apt2B Tuxedo Sleeper Sectional is a luxury purchase worth the price tag. After testing for a year in a busy household with two playful young boys and two cats, this sleeper sofa is super durable and built to withstand any spills and pet scratches.

This modern-style sectional is constructed with hypoallergenic and easy-to-clean fabrics. The couch itself is firm yet super comfortable, with high-density foam seat cushions. We found ourselves lounging and sleeping on it for hours, even through our favorite movies. While the couch itself feels solid, the mattress is plush but still supportive enough that you won’t wake up to any back pain.

Even after a year of testing, our overnight guests still chose to sleep on this sleeper sofa before checking into a hotel.

Converting the sectional to a sleeper is quick and simple, only taking us two minutes. And if you’ve never used a pull-out couch, helpful diagram tags are attached to the mattress frame for guidance.

This large sleeper sectional is super durable, kid and pet-friendly, enjoyable to sleep on, and has plenty of fabric and color options for customizability. Because these are made-to-order, the company reports a 30-day production window, but in our experience, it took our sofa five to seven weeks, with an additional delivery time of 14 to 21 days. We highly recommend waiting until your sectional ships before replacing your couch.

What We Like

  • Simple and modern design

  • Convertible design

  • Water and pill resistant

What We Don't Like

  • Only one pillow top armrest

Convertible design sleeper sofas are great for tight living spaces. Instead of pulling out a mattress, you simply lay the sofa’s surface flat, and in this case, you’re detaching the back cushion from the seat, leaving you with a metal-framed back.

The AllModern Elsmere Upholstered Convertible Sofa has a modern, simple design and comes in four neutral-colored performance fabrics. Although there’s no mattress, the cushion is firm yet comfortable. But if you like your bedding on the more plush side, we recommend adding a mattress topper.

When it comes to assembly, you can opt for a free white glove delivery, but rest assured, the only assembly needed is the installation of the metal base and arm, making it a breeze to set up.

This sleeper sofa is an excellent option for shoppers looking for extra seating in their office or living room and those with occasional overnight guests.

Sofa Dimensions: 81 x 43 x 29 inches | Mattress Size: 75 x 31.1 x 16 (seat size) | Frame Material: Solid wood | Upholstery Material: Polyester blend

Final Verdict

Built to last and with a gorgeous, modern design, the West Elm Haven Queen Sleeper Sofa is our best overall sleeper sofa. Its mattress is comfortable and plush enough to sleep on all week, and its down-alternative deep-seated cushions are cozy yet supportive enough to lounge in and binge-watch your favorite movies all night. For a more firmer alternative, we recommend our most comfortable mattress pick, the Joybird Briar Sleeper Sofa. Its cushions are firm yet comfortable and we found its mattress to be the most comfortable in our guide.

How We Tested the Sleeper Sofas

Over the last year, we’ve tested five sleeper sofas in our homes. Here’s how we evaluated them:

Assembly and Delivery: We assembled each sofa, following the instructions and timed how long the entire process took. If we opted for white-glove delivery and assembly, we documented our experience on how it arrived, its convenience, and how long it took the professionals to assemble the sofa. We also tested how long it took us to convert the sofa to a sleeper and vice versa.

Mechanism Type: We tested the smoothness and easiness of each sleeper’s mechanism type, whether it was an effortless pull-out mechanism, a click-clack mechanism where the back is laid flat, or a hybrid mechanism of all the above.

Fabric Quality: How well did each sleeper sofa hold up throughout the year, and its performance in stains, snags, and scratches.

Mattress type and size: We assessed each mattress by its comfortability and size, including whether or not we could feel the frame underneath, whether or not we experienced any back pain or body aches, and how firm or soft the mattress was.

Frame construction and durability: Along with the sleeper’s mattress comfortability, we noted whether it had a solid base and how well it held up during the year. This also went into the fabric’s quality and how well it held up, whether in busy households with pets and kids or from natural wear and tear.

When Shopping for Sleeper Sofas, Look for

An Easy-to-Use Pull-Out Mechanism

When shopping for the best sleeper sofas, it’s important to consider your mechanism preference. Do you want a traditional pull-out mechanism, like our overall best sleeper sofa pick, the West Elm Haven Queen Sleeper Sofa? Or a convertible mechanism where the back is laid flat, like our best convertible design pick, the AllModern Elsmere Upholstered Convertible Sofa, or a hybrid mechanism like our best value pick, the Article Nordby Pep Sofa Bed.

The pull-out mechanism is the traditional mechanism. Under the seat cushions, you pull the mattress frame out from the center and unfold the frame's legs while also unfolding the mattress, both of which will lay flat once the sofa is converted into a bed.

The convertible mechanism, also known as the click-clack mechanism, has no physical mattress and is easily converted by a simple lock release. The sofa's backrest is now laid flat with the seat still in place, creating an upholstered-like bed. This mechanism type is the easiest of them all, as it just involves locking the sofa's back in and out of place.

The hybrid mechanism is a combination of both sofa mechanisms. It can involve pulling, folding, or sliding the frame out to convert the sofa into a bed. For example, the bottom of the Article Nordby Pep Sofa Bed slides out and lifts up into a sofa bed.

Long-Lasting Frame Construction

Sleeper sofas should be made with a quality frame construction, which means solid hardwoods and double-dowed, screwed, and glued together corners for reinforcement. A sturdy, durable frame like kiln-dried hardwood or engineered wood will be able to support weight and perform as a better sleeper sofa for a long period of time.

“Quality furniture is made with this standard, and sleepers should especially be made to this standard because of the movement and function that will be performed when opening and closing the mattress,” says Smith.

A sleeper sofa moves more than a plain old couch, so you want to know that the pieces that make it up are going to last for years of good sleeping.

What Size Mattress is Right for Your Space?

Whether you live in a tight space and are looking for a sleeper sofa for small spaces or want to make sure your guests are always cool, there are just as many mattresses to pick from as sleeper sofas. The type of mattress and its size is essential when shopping for a sleeper sofas, as you're able to pick something that matches and fits your space as well as your personal comfort and sleep preference.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Kenedee Fowler is a commerce writer for The Spruce and Better Homes and Gardens, specializing in bedding, bath, decor, and furniture. She grew up with an old-fashioned sleeper sectional that squeaked when you pulled it out but was comfortable to lounge on as a sofa. The mattress wasn’t the most luxurious, either. For this article, Kenedee updated our list based on her experience of what not to look for in a sleeper sofa while referencing our latest round of testing insights on the best sleeper sofas.
