I think I saw this them play this for a championship promotion a few years ago. I didnt know they made a similar game on the Wii U, its a really cool idea. Although I'm not really nostalgic for the NES titles. I'd love a SNES or N64 version of the same idea.

Nintendo Life just dropped a video ranking all the mainline Pokemon games, which is an interesting coincidence because I've also been playing through some of the ones I'd never played before, in an attempt to create my own tier list.

I curiously tried looking up tier lists / rankings of mainline Pokemon games, and I don't think I've ever seen a franchise with less consistency between different people's perspectives than when it comes to different generations of Pokemon games. For each person who loves one of the generations, another person absolutely hates it. It's pretty interesting just how varied the opinions are.

Anyways, here's my subjective ranking so far, including brief lists of the things I noticed and valued. I decided to keep all the games within a generation "together", internally comparing remastered and original versions within the same generation, while also externally comparing generation vs. generation as a whole. (The one exception is Gen 8, since Legends: Arceus is considered Gen 8 along with Scarlet/Violet, even though L:A is a completely different Pokemon game from S/V.) I still have to play Gens 5, 6, and 7, and how much I like/dislike them might force me to move around other games on my list, to make room for the remaining ones.

Hilariously, gen 3 is my favourite game in the series and Legends:Arceus is imo a steaming pile of trash and by far the worst.
I posted my issues with L:A earlier in the thread so cba repeating that.

Gen 3 perks:
- massive jump in graphics, controls, QoL systems from gens 1&2
- by far the coolest pokedex imo (sooo many tier 2 lines: metagross, salamence, aggron, flygon, walrein, shiftry, ludicolo, etc.)
- great post game in the battle tower
- added abilities, natures, weather, a bunch of new moves and stats rework which made competitive pokemon pvp more popular
- fun gimmicks like 2v2 battles and contests
- one of the last gens that had some actual difficulty, before they arbitrarily decided to cap gym leaders at 4 pokemon and elite 4 at 5.
- champion Steven Stone

To each their own Nintendo Switch Thread - Page 203 (10) With Gen3 and all its side-gimmicks, like performing in contests and decorating bases, I found myself doing a lot less battling and collecting Pokemon, compared to other generations, but battling and collecting Pokemon are what I want to do the most in a Pokemon game. If I'm battling and collecting Pokemon 90% of the time, I'm probably enjoying the gameplay more than if I'm only doing those 70% of the time.

I like battle tower as the endgame. I believe gen 3-7 all had it. Gen 6 had battle chateau to grind your pokemon to 100, which is better than feeding them candies and other nonsense from later games.

- Worst starters in the series, both in interest and competitive viability. Typhlosion is literally a copy of Charizard stats wise but less interesting
- Most of the newly introduced pokemon suck. All of the gym leaders except Whitney have a gen 1 ace pokemon
- No real enemy. It's just team rocket waiting for Giovanni to come back.
- Terrible level scaling of wild pokemon and gyms requiring the most grinding in the series by far
- Kanto is completely empty besides the gyms, which are also terribly scaled
- Worst rival in the series
- Apricorns and other mechanics like massage arbitrarily capped at once per day
- Introduced baby pokemon which are pointless
- Introduced friendship level up mechanic which is painful
- Champion and elite 4 recycled from gen 1
- Legendary dog hunt
- In game items and events tied to a specific day of the week
- Worst story, there basically isn't one
- No viable dark types until mount silver
- the f*cking tree headbutting to get heracross

I just got PTSD flashbacks from a TL post.

This alone is some good evidence against Gen 2 lol, although I enjoyed it plenty while playing it as a kid. Not that that says much.

I think Battle Tower is fun, but I also like when there are other side quests and explorations out in the world that become unlocked as part of the end/post-game.

<rolls down sleeves> Yeah okay, those are very good points lol. I perceived the 2 key differences between Typhlosion and Charizard to be that the latter was the "hard starter Pokemon" for Gen1 while the former was an "easier starter Pokemon" for Gen2, and that Typhlosion has fewer weaknesses by not also being flying-type, making Typhlosion just plain "better" / "more convenient" than Charizard for a standard/beginner playthrough. Of course, the fact that the starters are generally grass/water/fire can lead to a feeling of redundancy, especially if you use the same starter type across multiple generations.

I liked how revisiting Kanto was mostly the same, for nostalgia reasons. I think a few new type-pairs (like ground/water Quagsire, which nullified electric vs. water but doubled the grass weakness) were interesting, and I thought introducing Umbreon and Espeon, and how they evolved, was cool too.

Yeah, the Entei, Raikou, and Suicune searches are inexcusably dumb.

Gen 5 is the best imo, then gen 6 (including ORAS) and gen 1 tied for second. I understand that this is a controversial opinion.

I also really like BDSP, keeping things on a switch theme, but I feel like I was in the minority

I'm really looking forward to the next generation of Pokemon, which will surely be released on the next Nintendo console. Gen 10 has already been confirmed to include a sequel to Pokemon Legends: Arceus, called Pokemon Legends: Z-A (related to Gen 6's Pokemon X and Y), and I can't help but also assume that there will be another pair of Pokemon games coming out, independent from the single Z-A game. This would be similar to how Gen 8 had the usual pair of Pokemon games (Sword and Shield), plus the additional, separate-from-that-pair-but-also-counting-as-a-mainline-game Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

I know that a lot of people haven't been too happy with the past two generations of mainline Pokemon games on Switch (Sword/Shield, Legends: Arceus, and Scarlet/Violet), especially compared to older generations. I think the most universal complaint isn't so much the substance or content of the games, as it is the graphics / framerate / draw distance / appearance of the games. I feel like The Pokémon Company and Nintendo are notorious for not caring about those things when it comes to the Pokemon franchise, which is unfortunate. Maybe with the next-gen hardware, they'll run out of excuses for why they won't make the game look or perform as beautifully as it should. I don't expect the next Pokemon games to run as smoothly as a high-end PC running Palworld, and I generally don't care about graphics that much, but I think Pokemon has coasted for way too long in that department.

What do you all think? I'm sure that in 1-2 years, Gen 10 Pokemon will sell like crazy no matter what, but what are some changes / improvements you would like to see (either for the already-announced PL: Z-A game or for the inevitable next pair of games, whatever they end up being called)?

Gen 10 of Pokemon games on the way

POKEMON fans rejoice — a new game is on the horizon. The Pokemon Company and Game Freak will release a new Legends game set in the franchise’s Kalos region in 2025.

This was revealed during the Pokemon Presents showcase on Feb 27. The new game, Pokemon Legends Z-A, is a sequel to the wildly popular Pokemon Legends Arceus, released in 2022.

According to Polygon, Pokemon Legends Z-A’s reveal trailer was somewhat scarce on details, but the game will send players to Lumiose City, the Parisian-inspired central city of Pokemon X and Y.

The official description reads: “Pokemon Legends: Z-A, an ambitious new entry to the Pokemon video game series, will launch on Nintendo Switch systems in 2025. A new adventure awaits within Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan is under way to shape the city into a place that belongs to both people and Pokemon.”

Beyond that, the trailer shows which Pokemon players can expect to appear in Pokemon Legends Z-A but does not feature any gameplay.

The trailer does, however, hint at the return of Mega Evolutions, a mechanic introduced in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y.

I would love to see them take some actual time and not just sh*t out a game in less than a year.

I don't think they will though, for two main reasons. First, they have their full schedule with new anime seaons and cards that they stick to so rigorously, they need a new game each year as part of the schedule. Second, people will just buy it anyway. I'm guilty of that Nintendo Switch Thread - Page 203 (11) fomo is a killer.

This is also an unrealistic desire but I wish they would scale back on the super-happy family friendly tone of the last couple of games and bring back some darkness and jeopardy. Have some drama and stakes.

I really enjoyed the world of Kalos, it definitely felt like it had more potential. Hopefully Z legends is good, I'll probably get it.

This and also introduce some sort of difficulty. I get it this probably needs to target from 4 to 40 y'olds but having the "rival" having the weak pairing against our starter and feeling over leveled already after half an hour takes away a lot from the enjoyment of these. Also why is nobody using more than one Pokémon or 2? You have 6 slots npc's use them!

While i really liked x and y, and also enjoyed arceus, i hope for the new one the pkm you use are somewhat relevant. My main annoyance with arceus was that regardless of what i used, the battles felt trivial.

A fabricated cracked display? Where have I heard this one before? Do I see a pattern here? Nintendo Switch Thread - Page 203 (13)

Rossmann is super informative, however, he gets too emotional about these things. Nintendo is pure scum and have demonstrated anti-consumer practices for several decades. There is no need to pretend to be shocked and chagrined... mortified and stupified.

wow you have played/bought a lot games @DarkPlasmaBall. I think Nintendo Switch only offer physical copy/games, you need a room for that amount.
In that case I prefer to have all of them in one launcher (like steam).

I always think about to buy a switch, but it is not really worth for me if I only buy 2-3 games at all.

For the Switch, most of the games I own are digital, not physical. I've always been a fan of collecting video game cartridges (especially the N64 library, which I've recently completed), but for this console generation, I've really appreciated the convenience of having everything immediately accessible without needing to manually swap games. I remember filling up Game Boy / DS cases/bags full of individual cartridges, back in the day; I'm mostly done with that, as far as I can tell.

Given how many years the Switch has already been around, you can certainly watch/read reviews on any games you'd consider buying! If, after all that, you still don't think you'd buy more than just a few games, then it's probably not worth it to buy the console. I'd definitely recommend any game that I've ranked as S, A+, A, or A- tier!

I think Battle Tower is fun, but I also like when there are other side quests and explorations out in the world that become unlocked as part of the end/post-game.

I do like the post-game side quests and I feel like most games have a good amount of them (especially the remakes that make a ton of legendaries available). I really didn't like dens replacing battle tower as the end game challenge, however. The Sw/Sh games were really good otherwise. I haven't tried the new ones yet.

Pokemon games generally have a short, easy main game and it feels like it's getting shorter and easier with every new generation. That puts more of an emphasis on the endgame activities to make the games worth it.

I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, I don't think I like that approach. I don't want the main game to be "sacrificed" and need to rely on the post-game to still be a worthwhile purchase; I want the post-game to be amazing bonus content that takes the entire package from great to absolutely spectacular.

Nintendo and the Switch are still absolutely crushing it in sales Nintendo Switch Thread - Page 203 (14)

And profit Nintendo Switch Thread - Page 203 (15)

This is a nice little nod and analysis of how Nintendo and its vision of innovation, creativity, and gameplay are massively more successful than the diminishing returns of Sony's/Microsoft's philosophy of graphics, graphics, and more graphics. When all you do is focus on higher resolution and the most expensive technology, games become way too expensive to create and take much longer to produce, hence the small number of PS5 and Xbox S/X games available (and their much, much weaker sales in both hardware and software), compared to the Switch.

I'm definitely with you on this. I want the main game to be the main game and not some throw in. The last mainline entry I played was Sword. I think I finished the main game in 50-60 hours and maybe half of that was in the optional open world area. The games have definitely become easier. The first few had some dungeon crawls (and even treks between towns) that would require you to actually use your entire team so you don't run out of HP and PP.
