American Sign Language: "disgust"

To sign gross, make a face of disgust and rub your dominant hand in a claw shape on top of your belly, in counter-clockwise circles. Another popular way to sign gross in ASL is to take your dominant claw-shaped hand, then make a clockwise motion on your chest.

Black American Sign Language (BASL) or Black Sign Variation (BSV) is a dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) used most commonly by deaf African Americans in the United States. The divergence from ASL was influenced largely by the segregation of schools in the American South.

This one of ASL signatures -- the wiggling index finger -- has multiple usages that may approximately mean "is that so", "is that a fact". It's used by Deaf fluent and native signers. It's accompanied with natural intonation, including raising eyebrows.

How do you sign gravy in ASL? ›

To sign gravy, form the ASL letter Y sign with your dominant hand, then tip it on the thumb side to mimic a gravy boat pouring gravy onto a dish or platter. With your 'gravy boat' tipped on the spout side, form a circle laterally, as if you are spreading the gravy evenly around the dish as you pour.

The normal developmental age for a baby's first spoken word is 9 – 12 months. Whereas, to communicate via sign language only gross motor skills are needed to move the arms and hands to communicate the intended message.

The sign for "ruin" also means "spoil" as in "spoiled milk." The dominant-hand "X"-handshape is placed on top of the non-dominant "X"-handshape (both "X" handshapes have the knuckle pointing forward rather than upward. The non-dominant hand doesn't move. The dominant hand slides forward and (usually) pivots up.

Pronunciation (sign description): Dominant upright "clawed-L" handshape in front of non-dominant upright index finger, both palms facing each other in neutral space, fingertips of forefinger and thumb of dominant hand tap twice on non-dominant forefinger.

American Sign Language: "yell"

Hold a loose "C" hand, palm up, near your mouth (sort of as if you were holding an apple which you were about to take a bite out of) and then move your hand forward and upward as if representing a "yell" coming out of your mouth. Match your facial expression to the intensity of your yell.
